Anzac Bridge South, White Bay

Just below the western end of the Anzac Bridge in Sydney are several mature Banksia trees. The image is a rendering of some of these trees looking south.

Collecting some of the pods from the ground around the tree’s base, they were then calcined by placing them in a tin can which had a couple of small holes punctured in it to allow just a very small amount of oxygen in, not enough to allow the pods to burn, but also allowing the pressure from within the can to escape. The pods were roasted in a fire for about 4 hours, then once cool, were ground, washed to remove any soluble impurities, dried and then ground again.
